Further, Google Plus is also popular social media platform and provides unique business i.e. business present with the Google Plus enjoys the increased ranking in terms of Google search. The result is that Google works to with the network to improve the brand awareness among the customers. Next, platform is Twitter which can be used as the useful platform for the organizations as it provides steady flow of news flashes and links to share with the followers. If the company wants to share image or short video content, for those another platform is Instagram that enables the companies to attract huge audience of users. Along with this, there are many other platforms which offer marketing opportunities for the right type of business. Pint erest is continuously growing and female user social media platform and LinkedIn is popular among the freelancers to find out the clients. Advantages According to theWatson (2002), due to increase in popularity of global marketing, many businesses have started endorsing their products and services on social media. Many social network sites like Facebook and Twitter has changed the process of advertising and promotion. Instead of websitessome businesses are able to attract customers by social media pages. There are relatively some examples of using social media in business. The main benefit of using social media is that it reduces the cost of the business. The cost used in other marketing tools like distributers, middlemen or sales person is high in comparison to cost incurred on using social media. Also, social media enables the companies to contact with its customers which are not possible in other distribution channels. By providing advantage in two areas for the customers, many social media platforms reduce costs and increase the access of customers (Watson et al, 2002). Social media platforms are useful for the businesses as they provides effective ways of marketing to broaden their exposure in the market with the lower cost as compared to traditional marketing. By establishing the presence on the commonly used platforms such as Twitter and FaceBook which are helpful to target new customers and improving the brand image among the customers. Along with this, social media provides two-way communication which is helpful in improving the customer services and enables the business to achieve new information about the customers in the operating market (Barefoot Szabo, 2010). Firstly, without any hindrance the companies are able to provide information regarding goods and services to its customers. Beside this, customers can easily understand the available information. For example, scheduling and reservation system in airlines is complex to generate and sustain in terms of individual needs. In such case, social media or web based concept is very useful to maintain customers loyalty as preferences of customers are quite large. Secondly, by using social media companies are able to modify its information to communicate with customers. This information allows the customers to meet their needs (Weinberg, 2009). Social media provide opportunities to the companies to do transactions which require human contact. Five advantages of using social media in business are: Interactivity: Because of using social media, customers are becoming more active in shopping their behavior now days. Interactivity is one of the main factors in new media technologies which provide better quality of information with the control over the content of social media (Liu, Yuping Shrum, 2002). Interactivity can be considered as consumer oriented information with messages, machines which focus on practical features of social networking process. The reason of involvement and positive attitude of customer towards any brand is increasing level of inactivity (Xiang Gretzel, 2010). Cost-related: The main benefit of social media is minimization of costs. Majorities of social media sites can easily be accessed and is free to post any kind of information. Businesses can run easily with a limited budget using social media campaigns. With little cash investment it provides the advantage of targeting large number of customers Social interaction: This is one of the most important phenomena in social media to extend and create new forms of social interaction. Now days people spend a lot of time on social media communications. Social networking sites are very popular among the customers as like destinations. A study reveals that the information which is available on social networking sites have put direct impact on purchasing power of the customers (Arthur et al, 2006). Customer service: It is very important factor for social media marketing. Every company should have well designed customer service system. There are many links available on online like frequently asked questions (FAQs) that are very useful for buying process in customer decision making. Companies which are using Logistics system provide guarantees for fast delivery after checkout process which helps in increasing customers satisfaction. This system allows many different ways to deliver the products (Tanuri, 2010). Further, the order fulfillment and delivery system are critical to e-loyalty development. For the fast delivery, there is the need of proper logistics system which contributes in the customer satisfaction and loyal behavior towards the product. There are some customers who prefer the product delivery by the parcel services like FedEx and UPS. Some like to pick the products in the physical store. So, to minimize the insecurity of the product delivery, the social media marketers offer the brands that are well-known, good product quality and guarantees. Targeted market: Social media helps in attracting various people and helps in building strong customers base. Social media also provide the mouth world which helps in promoting much beyond advertisement. In some segments of customers, traditional methods of marketing are not helpful. Thus social media helps there in marketing of products. For example-if a person is interested in music of any specific country, and he likes it on social media then these sites will show ads related to that countrys music performance and performers. Increased brand loyalty: To improve the brand loyalty among the customers, social media is very effective tool for the companies. A study conducted by The Social Habit reveals that there are 53% of Americans who follow the brands on social media and they are more likely to remain loyal for those brands. In current time, social media is now more than a sales pitch. Social media platform provides two-way communication methods that are helpful for the companies to build strong relationship with the existing and new customers. The social media makes the companies more confident in the decision making process. Along with this, social media is helpful in encouraging the customers to select the brand in future (Weiss, Lurie Macinnis, 2008). Disadvantages Although social media is the powerful marketing tool but it is not risk free. Followers on the social media are free to post their views and comments on these platforms but there is the risk of negative publicity by the consumers. A quick response by the company can minimize the possibilities of risk but it cannot be erased properly. Along with this, there is another threat of social media i.e. Hackers. The hackers can take over the website page of the company or they share wrong information that can quickly go viral. Even every large and famous company has to face the threat of hacking so, it is important for the small businesses to take safety precautions while creating and sharing the password information with the employees.Yet social media generate many opportunities for business but there are many challenges in social media. The main disadvantages of social media marketing are as follows- Trademark issue: There can be issues related to trademark or copyright in using social media. For a company, the brand and other property are valuable for the products and services which they are offering. Business men should regularly check their trademarks and copyrights to avoid misuse of intellectual property. Trademarks and copyrights are important factors but it can also be ruined by the abuse of businesss trademark (Teinman Hawkins, 2010). Privacy issue: In social media marketing of businesses, there can be issues related to security, trust and privacy. So it is very important for the company to have knowledge about these issues. To reduce uncertainty about brand trust, the company should be loyal about their products as customer can not touch, feel the products in online marketing. The perceptions about internet like internet is unreliable, unsafe issues also create disadvantages for social media (Ray et al, 2011). Negative feedback: Regarding products and service, consumers are now free to give their feedbacks whether positive or negative which creates pressure on the companies. Customers views greatly impact the business process of a company in the market and negative feedbacks also spoil the brand of the company in the market. Companies cannot ignore their negative feedbacks. Discussion According to Gurau (2008), the online marketing environment provides various opportunities as well as challenges for the marketers. The customers are becoming more proactive but the companies have more opportunities to target more and more customers in the market. The social media allows the companies to gather, register, analyze and utilize the customers data for better targeting audiences. The cost-related features, interactivity, social interactions, customer service and target market opportunities are the features for the companies to get success in the social media marketing (Kaplan Haenlein, 2010). On the other hand, down side of the social media include time intensive, trust, privacy and security issue, trademark and copyright issue, negative feedback from the customers and user-generated content (UGC) and these are the major barriers facing by the social media marketers. So, it is recommended that the message communicated online should include core corporate values, online s trategy and tactics of the organization. The selection of the proper communication mix should be done by the company for the effective social media marketing (Sheth Sharma, 2005). Conclusion As the key part of communication, social media is an important tool which can be found anywhere and should be measured by marketers, advertisers and content creators. Now days customers are getting new place in social media. Social media tools are very popular in uploading the videos and pictures of the products. Based on above report, it is seen that there are both advantages and disadvantages in using social media in marketing of products by the companies. Various organizations are still doing research to get a correct method of using social media. Many marketers are still not aware of the challenges and risks associated with social media marketing. So, before opting for social media in business, business men should do complete study on it. A company must know the values and plans of using social media in marketing of its product and services. To satisfy the requirements of its customers, companies should be loyal and should provide good quality products.; References Arthur, D., Sherman, C., Appel, D. Moore, L. (2006). The History of Greece Essay Example For Students

The History of Greece Essay The two most dominating city-states in Greece of their time, Athens and Sparta, were great rivals with two very different ways of life. Spartas overbearing military and Athens impartial justice system and government are models for many modern day countries. Even though these two city-states differ greatly from one another, they share many characteristics of their country and their time period. Athens and Sparta were the two most powerful Greek territories of their time. Like most cities of the same country, they have the same Greek culture, worshipping the same Greek gods and speaking Greek. Like all Greeks, their people loved to talk and tell stories. Although they fought against each other, their citizens equally had great amounts of pride for their entire country as well as their city-states. The two rivals were both devoted mainly to agriculture and based their wealth, but not their success, on agriculture. Both also participated in the annual Olympics, an ancient Greek national athletic competition which is now a worldwide tradition. These to Greek city-states were the most feared city-states in all of Greece. We will write a custom essay on The History of Greece specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now Though Athens and Sparta were similar, they were also very different. Athens was the first democracy, and it was also the first to govern with trial by jury. Athens main accomplishment was that it had a very strong Navy. It was the command of the sea and the head of the Naval Alliance, or the Delian League. Athens was the most feared city-state to fight at sea. Its other achievements were that is had excellent forms of art, architecture, drama and literature, philosophy, science, and medicine. It was very wealthy and had beautiful, extravagant temples. The boys of Athens went to school between the ages of five and eighteen, where they learned reading, writing, mathematics, music, poetry, sports and gymnastics. The girls stayed at home and learned spinning, weaving and domestic arts. Athens had well educated men, a good sense of art, and an all-powerful navy. Sparta developed the most powerful military oligarchy of their time. They had a very strong army and were the most feared city-state to fight on land. Sparta was a member of the Peloponnesian League and was the most powerful people in it. Its excellent military conquered many territories, which they controlled with slaves. Spartas sole achievement, other than military supremacy, was that its people possessed a simple life style, with no care for the arts of Athens. When Spartan boys turned seven years old they began training for the military, and they ceased their training at the age of twenty. There was much more gender equality in Sparta than in Athens, and girls went to school where they learned reading, writing, athletics, gymnastics, and survival skills, and they could even join the military. Sparta was militarily supreme over Athens, and it also supported better equality and simplicity of life. Sparta and Athens contrasted greatly in military, art, education, government, and in many other areas. The few similarities they had were mainly based on their countrys rituals and traditions. These rituals and traditions are what the modern world remembers of the Greek culture.

Safely Viewing Solar Eclipses

Safely Viewing Solar Eclipses Solar eclipses are among the most dramatic celestial events anyone can witness. They give people a chance to witness parts of the Suns atmosphere they otherwise never get to see. However, looking directly at the Sun can be hazardous and viewing solar eclipses should only be done with safety measures firmly in place. Its worth taking the time to learn how to view these spectacular events without harming ones eyes. For many people, theyre a rare event and worth taking the time to understand how to view safely.   Why Take Precautions? The most important thing to remember about solar eclipses is that looking directly at the Sun at any time is unsafe, including during most eclipses. It is only safe to do so during the few brief seconds or minutes of a total  solar eclipse  when the Moon blocks the light from the Sun. At any other time, viewers need to take extreme precautions to save their eyesight. Partial eclipses, annular eclipses and the partial phase of a total eclipse are never safe to view directly without taking precautions. Even when most of the Sun is obscured during the partial phase of a total solar eclipse, the portion that is still in sight is very bright and can not be viewed without eye protection. Failure to use appropriate filtration may result in permanent eye damage or blindness.   Safe Ways to Gaze One safe method of viewing a solar eclipse is to use a Pinhole Projector. These devices use  a small hole to project an upside-down image of the Sun onto a screen located a half-meter or more beyond the opening. A similar view can be created by interlacing the fingers of both hands and allowing the light to shine through to the ground below. Its also very safe to direct the Sun through the large end of an amateur-type telescope and allow it to project out  of the eyepiece onto a white wall or piece of paper. NEVER LOOK THROUGH THE TELESCOPE unless it has a filter, however!   Filters Never use a telescope to look at the sun without a proper filter. This is especially important if someone is using a telescope to photograph the event. Both eyes AND cameras can be harmed without proper filters attached. Filters can also be used to look directly at the sun, but use caution. People can use welders goggles with a rating of 14 or higher, but no one should use them to look through binoculars or a telescope. Some telescope and camera manufacturers sell metal-coated filters that are safe for viewing the Sun. There are also specialty glasses which can be purchased for eclipse viewing. These can often be found advertised in astronomy and science magazines. People have often remarked that  looking at the Sun through a CD is safe. Its not. NO  one should even think about doing so. Its important to stick to products that are marked safe for eclipse viewing. Its important to always be careful when using filters, glasses, or pinhole projection during the partial phases of a total eclipse. People should  only look for a moment before looking away. Tiny holes in the filters can still subject a persons eyes to possible damage if viewed for extended periods.   How to View During Totality   The moments during a total eclipse when the Moon is completely obstructing the Sun are the only safe times that people can look directly at an eclipse without eye protection. Totality can be very short, only a few seconds up to a few minutes. At the beginning and end of totality, the last stray rays of the Sun can cause some harm, so its best to keep the eye protection in place until the so-called diamond ring has flashed. Thats the last bit of sunlight passing between the peaks of the lunar mountains. Once the Moon moves completely in front of the Sun, then its safe to remove eye protection.   Close to the end of totality, another diamond ring appears. Thats a great signal that its time to put the eye protection back on. It means the Sun will soon be slipping back into view, in all its fiery fury.   Misconceptions about Eclipses Every time theres a solar eclipse, wild tales start to circulate about them. Some of those stories are based on superstitions. Others are based on a lack of understanding of eclipses. For example, some schools locked their children inside during eclipses because school administrators were afraid that harmful rays from the Sun would hurt the students. There is nothing about sunbeams that make them different during an eclipse. Theyre the same sunbeams that shine all the time from our star. Of course, teachers and administrators should allow kids to view an eclipse, but that means they need to be trained in safety procedures. During the total eclipse of August 2017, some teachers were too afraid to learn the procedures, and stories did circulate of kids being forbidden to witness one of these amazing sights. A little scientific understanding would have gone a long way toward providing a wonderful experience for the kids who were in the path of totality.  The most important things to r emember are to learn about eclipses, learn to view safely, and above all - enjoy the view!    Edited and updated by  Carolyn Collins Petersen.

Analysis on the Story Two Kinds Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Analysis on the Story Two Kinds - Essay Example Her mother believed that they can start a new life in America. They went to America after her mother lost everything in China. This indicates that her mother believed that America was an escape from disillusion, frustration, misery and death. America was freedom, hope and dreams fulfilled. But this didn’t happen with Jing Mei. Her life in America was full of sadness, frustrations and tension. Two Kinds was a story that dealt mother and daughter relationship. But more than that, it shows us how our social environment affects our belief in things. The mother and daughter relationship that was presented in the story was filled with tension. The mother and the daughter were very different from each other. Not because they were really different, but because the daughter wanted to be different from her mother. We become who we are not because other people want us to be that person, but because we choose to be or not to be that person. We choose our own identity, we choose the path w e want to take in life. And this was exactly what Jing Mei did in the story. She chose the path opposite of what her mother wants her to be. At first, she was excited about being good in something. As her mother tried to find out where she’s good at, she continuously felt the pressure to be good. And, unfortunately, she also continuously felt the disappointment of her mother everytime she cannot be good in whatever her mother pushed her to do. She tried ballet. She tried being Shirley Temple. She tried being a remarkable child that her mother saw in the magazines, like that child who knew â€Å"all the capitals of all the states and even the most of the European countries† or that child who can multiply numbers in her head, or the other one who can stand on his head without using his hands. And because she failed to be those remarkable children, she became frustrated. She felt she will always be the ordinary girl that her mother does not want her to become. And so she became defiant. She became angry and she vowed to herself that her mother will not change who she is, that she won’t become someone she is not. And she stopped trying to become good at something her mother wants her to be. When her mother pushed her to learn the piano, she became defiant once more. Her defiance led to her laziness. She purposely did not try to learn the piano which led to her humiliating experience at a talent show. This strained her relationship with her mother even more. And it never changed as she grew up. She always managed to fail. And this increased the gap between her and her mother. We have always wanted to become someone. Jing Mei was not different. But because of her mother’s desire to make her as someone who she can’t be, Jing Mei resented success. This resulted to her failure everytime she attempts to become better. She believed that she is not a genius, she believed she can never be good at something. She believed she can never be t he daughter that her mother wanted her to be. To which her mother kept repeating that she didn’t want to change her, that she just wants her to become the best at something she could do. But because of the constant struggle who is in control of Jing Mei’s life, she and her mother fought endlessly. This shows that there are instances that forcing a person to do something she doesn’t really love would make her more miserable. It’s like setting her up for failure. Instead of helping her, Jing Mei’

Attempt to Understand the Conditions that Eventually Led to the Research Paper

Attempt to Understand the Conditions that Eventually Led to the Holocaust - Research Paper Example Hilberg (1985) in his account has sufficiently articulated the different historical stages that preceded the Holocaust and which set the ground ready for the 20th century genocide in all respects ranging from the legal status of such acts within the German territories, and to an extent beyond it, to the fundamentalist thoughts that would accompany such acts. Hilberg’s analysis is also marked for the in-depth details regarding the functioning of the pogrom machinery. The 20th-century holocaust also makes it possible to be read, and to be interrogated and further explore, as an event which is part of our modernity and all the institutions that mark its existence including bureaucracy. It also throws definite challenges to our understandings of the modern enlightenment rationality to the extent it reserves sufficient spaces to accommodate inhuman acts and thoughts under the disguise of being rationale. Nevertheless, the fact that the massacre of Jews could not be identified separ ately from the historical incidents that preceded it – both with and without any direct or indirect relation to it – and that it has not been the first or even the last of such massacres in the name of religion, race, ethnicity etc., might compel any sociological analysis of the 20th century genocide to broaden its perspectives beyond the scope and limits of modernity and rationality. However the relation between the modernity and holocaust gathers much more significance since, as Eberhard Jà ¤ckel wrote, â€Å"never before had a state with the authority of its responsible leader decided and announced that a specific human group, including its aged, its women and its children and infants, would be killed as quickly as possible, and then carried through this resolution using every possible means of state power† (quoted in Maier 1988, p 53).

The Importance of Working Together in Groups and Teams Essay -- Teamwo

The Importance of Working Together in Groups and Teams Realizing that a group can become a high performance team is important. Accomplishing this goal is invaluable, advantageous and profitable. Once able to operate from a group to the high performing team is a great step into preparation into the big business world. Leaders and members must also realize not only how to accomplish this but that some problems will and can arise from different demographic characteristics and cultural diversity. That is if one is in such a group, which the probability would be quite high. It is important that members of a group be knowledgeable and skillful in their positions, the degree to which those members can work harmoniously and cooperatively together is equally important and will form into a high performance team. Effective team management plays a high role in building high performance teams. It should always be a question as to what management can do to actively promote successful work teams. Skills and knowledge possessed by every member is also important for a team to become high performance. Although it is among the most important factors, however, it must be coupled with a good working relationship with every team member and good collaboration with every team member. The members who possess the good skills and wide knowledge will be a useful resource to the team if that team member can share their strengths with the other team members and vice versa. It is usually misconstrued that having skillful and intelligent team members is already enough to make a team work right. This kind of thinking is the reason why most teams, despite all of those competent members they have, fail to achieve their goals. A team should establish one common goal, not to think that way and develop a good working relationship with each member. (retrieved from: http://www.strictlysuccess.com, August 18, 2005) This can be done by self awareness exercises, like the DISC assessment and other assess ments or any other kind of self awareness exercises regarding communication style differences. Then these factors and important pieces of information should be taken into full consideration before the actual project is begun. These exercise or assessments can be great ice breakers and mark the difference between a group of individuals merely assigned to a team, as opposed to functioning as... ...of the direction of the project is to come. Whenever demographic or cultural diversity issues become array and cause conflicts and start interfering with the work or projects getting done, just like any other problem inducers, it is the client, the customers, the leaders and or the other stakeholders that are going to be dissatisfied with the results and they are the ones who will experience the negative results. All this may seem a little overwhelming and tiresome to some or to all, but do be assured it is not as hard as it seems. Just keep in mind that you have to embrace the differences between all the demographic characteristics and the culturally diverse team members that make up your group. This with an open mind, and a willingness to cooperate, compromise, and the pleasure to collaborate will harvest many great results and have the organization reaping the many great benefits along with a great top of the line fueled to the rim high performance team. ‘Manhunt’ written by Simon Armitage Essay

Introduction: In the poem ‘manhunt’ written by Simon Armitage, the poet uses form, structure and linguistic devices to convey the meaning of the poem. As the title of the poem suggests, the poem is written from the perspective a woman trying to find the person her husband was once, before he got injured. This poem explaines how War can cause Physical, emotional and psychological pain and how that can affect an intimate relationship. Structure: 13 stanzas of couplets each with irregular rhyme and rythm, which emphasises how mixed up and irregular their lives are as a result of the war. Structure: The poet also uses structure effectively to convey the meaning of the poem. As he introduces Different injuries in each couplet. Structure: The reader explores the husband’s body and mind the same way the wife has done. Each stanza consists of only two lines, this could represent how carefully the wife has to be around the husband in order not to hurt him, or to trigger a horrific memory of the past. The repetition of ‘and’ in several stanzas shows that this is an active process and only can the wife try and help her husband a little. The repetition of ‘only then†¦Ã¢â‚¬â„¢ suggests the slow painstaking process of trying to mend his wounds. Language: Armitage uses imagery effectively to portray the meaning of the poem, this is done by the use of metaphors , ‘the damaged, porcelain collar-bone’ this quote is saying how precious his collar bone is, and how breakable it is. The ‘porcelain’ emphasises how fragile her husband is and how careful she has to be around him.The poet cleverly uses a recount style that allows the speaker to reflect on her relationship with her husband. Evidence to support this is when she speaks of â€Å"the frozen river that ran through his face† the use of metaphors is powerful and emotive and highlights her feeling at this time.‘The parachute silk of his punctured lung’ is another metaphor used to describe the man’s injuries. Parachutes are used in military, a punctured parachute will be useless as it will not do its job. This could suggest that the man is now, in this state, no use as he feels nothing, againg going back to ‘the frozen river which ran through his face’ indicating everything has stopped and not moving – he has no emotions. My personal Opinion: In conclusion this poem makes me feel sympathetic because of their situation. A quote to support this is: â€Å"the hurt of his grazed heart† which conveys pain to the reader.

Best Majors for Pre-med Students

Are you aspiring to join the medical field? Your undergraduate major isnt nearly as important to medical school admissions as most students think. In fact, the very idea of a pre-med major is misleading because you can complete required pre-med coursework while pursuing any major. And while it may be tempting to think that biology is the best major for a medical school application, admissions data suggests otherwise. Math, humanities, and physical science majors slightly outperform biology majors on the MCAT, and they are also slightly more likely to receive acceptance to med school. These statistical differences are small, but they should be encouraging to med school hopefuls who also have interests in other areas. However, regardless of major, medical school applicants do need to plan their undergraduate classes carefully. To be prepared for the MCAT and medical school admissions requirements, all pre-med students should take classes in biology, chemistry (especially organic chemistry), physics, and math (calculus will be required by some programs). Courses in psychology and sociology are also a good idea. If you have completed this coursework successfully, your major doesnt matter so much to medical schools; in fact, a unique major might make you stand out. All of the majors in the following list will help you hone important skills needed for medical school. Read on to learn more about the best majors for pre-med students. Biology Biology is a logical choice for undergrad students intending to go to medical school. For one, students who want to go into medicine presumably enjoy the biological sciences, so they will be studying a field that genuinely interests them. But also, biology majors will—in the course of their normal coursework—fulfill most prerequisite coursework for medical school applications. Biology is the most popular major for medical school applicants. According to the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), 29,443 students who majored in the biological sciences applied to medical school, and they had a mean MCAT score of 505.5. Of those students, 11,843 entered medical school for an enrollment rate of 40.2%. Math and Statistics According to the AAMC, math and statistics majors have the highest mean score on the MCAT of any major: 509.4. They also have the highest enrollment rate: 48% of math-major applicants end up attending medical school. The reality is that most math and statistics majors do not go into health fields, but when they do, they are clearly quite successful. Math majors are good at problem-solving and logical thinking. They are trained to work with data, map out patterns, and find solutions. While the MCAT doesnt have a math section, it does have many questions that involve reading tables and graphs to draw conclusions. Engineering Most engineering majors plan to be engineers, but the skills learned as an undergraduate engineering major can be extremely useful for medical school and the practice of medicine. The human body, after all, is an extremely complex machine that functions using mechanical, electrical, chemical, and fluid systems. Engineers are taught to think in ways that have clear applications to the human body. Their ability to analyze complex systems and find solutions to system failures has clear applications within the medical profession. Nearly any engineering field can be a good choice for med school preparation. Mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, chemical engineering, and materials science all have applications in health fields, and they all teach skills that are good preparation for the MCAT. The AAMC does not have admissions data for engineering majors because it is an uncommon pre-med choice, but its likely that engineers would perform similarly to math majors. English English may seem like a rather unusual choice for medical school preparation, but data suggests otherwise. English and other humanities majors do better on the MCAT than biology majors, with a mean score of 507.6 compared to biologys 505.5. Similarly, humanities majors are statistically more successful with their med school applications than biology majors, even though they tend to have lower overall GPAs and science GPAs. What explains this situation? Think about the training English majors receive: English study is all about critical thinking, careful reading, textual analysis, analytical writing, and clear communication. Such skills are obviously helpful for the MCATs Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills section, but they can come into play in other sections as well. Also, English majors are well-prepared to write their personal statements and often perform well in interviews. If you love English but want to go to medical school, dont shy away from an English major, and remember that other humanities fields—history, philosophy, languages—have similar advantages. Spanish The argument for a Spanish major is similar to that of an English major. Youll learn critical thinking, analytical writing, close reading, and effective communication skills. And like English and other humanities majors, youll be in a field that outperforms biology majors on the MCAT, which is an encouraging sign. Spanish has some extra advantages though. By becoming proficient in a second language, youll be able to communicate with more patients. In the United States, Spanish is more prevalent than any other foreign language. Communication barriers are serious problems in hospitals, and many employers will give preference to job candidates who have second language skills. You may also find that your Spanish language skills open up interesting medical school opportunities for studying and practicing medicine abroad. Psychology Students in the social sciences—psychology, sociology, anthropology—tend to score about the same as biology majors on the MCAT. According to the AAMC, they earned a mean score of 505.6 compared to biologys 505.5. They also enroll at a slightly higher rate (41% vs 40%). The MCAT section Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior will be a breeze for psychology majors. Many psychology majors also study biochemistry, and classroom subjects have direct relevance to medical school topics: cognitive function, physiology, mental health disorders, and the workings of the brain. Plus, as we learn more about the close connection between mental and physical health, a psychology major will become increasingly relevant to the world of medicine. Physics Students who major in the physical sciences—physics, chemistry, astronomy, geology—are among the top performers on the MCAT with a mean score of 508. Their medical school enrollment rate is slightly below humanities and math majors, but still 6% higher than biology majors (46% vs 40%). Physics majors tend to be excellent problem solvers and critical thinkers. They understand scientific processes and research methods. They learn valuable quantitative skills and can grasp how systems work. The bodys electrical and mechanical systems will be easy for a physics student to interpret. They will also have an advantage on the MCATs Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems section. Nursing Nursing majors do not necessarily have to become nurses, and the skills they learn in nursing school have obvious relevance to medical school. A nursing student will have a greater knowledge of anatomy, nutrition, physiology, and microbiology than applicants from most other majors. When it comes time for clinical practice in medical school, nursing students will already feel at home because of their undergraduate clinical experiences. Math and English majors may have higher mean scores on the MCAT, but nursing majors will have far more familiarity with hospitals, medical equipment, and patient interactions. Nurses and students in the health sciences have mean MCAT scores that are lower than other majors (a 502.4 compared to a 505.6 across all majors). They also enroll at a lower rate (36% compared to 41% for all majors). That said, they have already demonstrated their dedication to a medical profession, and their nursing background can give them an invaluable understanding of a hospital environment that medical school admissions committees dont overlook.
